About MAXDONE wildlife cameras

MAXDONE makes compact trail cameras that UK owners mostly use in gardens, allotments, paddocks and woodland. Most of the range runs on a built-in rechargeable lithium battery topped up by a solar panel, so a camera strapped to a fence post or tree can keep recording through the British weather without a pile of AA batteries.

The WiFi models share a 64MP photo / 4K video sensor, 850 nm low-glow infrared for night shots out to about 20 m, a 0.1-second trigger and an IP66 weatherproof shell, and you view clips in the free TrailCam Go app over the camera's own WiFi hotspot. For a simple non-WiFi option there is the PH820, which runs on AA batteries and has a 2.0" colour screen.

Why people pick them

Built for the British weather

Solar + rechargeable

A lithium battery charged by the sun replaces disposable AA batteries on all the WiFi models.

Phone app, no fees

The camera makes its own WiFi/Bluetooth hotspot. View, download and share clips with no cloud plan or SIM.

IP66 weatherproof

Sealed housing rated for heavy rain, snow and dust.

Location marking

Save each camera's spot on the map in the app – handy when several are out in the woods.

Step by step

How to set up a MAXDONE wildlife camera

Based on the MAXDONE manuals and app guide, rewritten in short steps. Applies to the WiFi models; the PH820 is set up with its own screen and buttons.

  1. Charge it fully

Before the first use, charge the built-in battery over the USB-C cable until the indicator shows full. The solar panel then keeps it topped up outdoors.

  2. Check the memory card

Most models arrive with a 32 GB microSD card already in the slot. Format it in the camera or app before first use; cards up to 256 GB are supported.

  3. Install TrailCam Go

Install the free TrailCam Go app and allow the WiFi, Bluetooth and location permissions it asks for – they are needed to find the camera.

  4. Pair close up

Switch the camera on and hold your phone right next to it for the first connection. Afterwards the hotspot reaches about 15 m in the open.

  5. Choose your settings

A good start: motion detection, photo + video, 5-second interval, 10-second clips, medium sensitivity, timestamp on and the correct date and time.

  6. Mount and aim

For hedgehogs and small mammals, mount it low – around 30–50 cm – and aim along the path they use. Point the solar panel south and clear grass or twigs that could trigger empty clips.

Typically in the box

  • Trail camera
  • Solar panel (solar models)
  • Mounting strap and bracket
  • Screws and wall plugs
  • USB-C cable
  • 32 GB microSD card (most models)
  • User manual

Care and battery

Wipe the lens and PIR window now and then, keep the rubber seal clean and the covers closed. Under trees or in a north-facing garden the panel may not keep up in winter – bring the camera in for a USB-C top-up every few weeks. Download and clear the card regularly so loop recording doesn't overwrite clips you want to keep.

Quick fixes

  • The app can't find the cameraMake sure the camera is switched on, permissions are allowed and the phone is right next to it. These cameras don't join home WiFi – your phone connects to the camera's own hotspot.
  • Lots of empty clipsLower the PIR sensitivity, trim swaying plants in front of the lens and avoid aiming at a sunny lawn or a busy road.
  • Night shots look washed outMove the camera back from close walls, fences or feeders – infrared bouncing off a nearby surface over-exposes the frame.

FAQ

MAXDONE wildlife camera questions

Do MAXDONE cameras connect to my home WiFi or send alerts?

No. They are not 4G or home-WiFi security cameras. Each WiFi model creates its own short-range WiFi/Bluetooth hotspot that your phone joins through the TrailCam Go app when you are nearby. There are no real-time push alerts.

Is there a subscription?

No. The TrailCam Go app is free and footage stays on the camera's memory card and your phone; nothing goes through a paid cloud service.

Is a memory card included?

Yes – every camera on this page comes with a 32 GB microSD card. The WiFi models take cards up to 256 GB, the PH820 up to 512 GB.

Which is best for watching hedgehogs in the garden?

Any of them will do; owners often pick the PH970S or the PH960W with solar panel. Mount the camera low, 30–50 cm off the ground, a metre or two from the feeding station or hedgehog house, and use video mode with a short interval.

Will the solar panel keep up in a UK winter?

In an open spot the panel tops the battery up even on overcast days. In heavy shade or midwinter it may not fully keep pace, so expect an occasional USB-C charge. The split-panel model helps because the panel can go in the sun while the camera stays in the shade.

How good is the night vision, and does it glow?

The cameras use 850 nm low-glow infrared LEDs reaching about 20 m. There is a faint red glow when they fire but no white flash, so animals are rarely disturbed.

Are they waterproof?

The housings are rated IP66 – protected against heavy rain, snow and dust. Keep the covers and card slot closed when the camera is outside.

What's different about the PH820?

The PH820 is the traditional type: no WiFi or app, a 2.0" colour screen for setup and playback, 60MP stills and 4K video, and power from 8 × AA batteries or an external 5–6 V supply. It suits anyone who would rather not use a phone.

Which models have a solar panel?

The split-panel camera, the PH960W solar version, the PH970S and the green camo model are solar powered. The compact PH960W charges over USB-C only and the PH820 uses AA batteries.

Can I use one as a security camera?

Yes – many owners use them on drives, sheds and allotments. Remember footage is stored locally and you collect it by walking within app range; it isn't a live remote-monitoring system.
